Step 3: notify heirs and beneficiaries

Contact beneficiaries as soon as possible. Most states require notification to the beneficiaries within 30 to 60 days. Provide this notification in writing and include a copy of the Trust.  They will appreciate knowing what to expect. Upon a grantor's death, the Trust becomes irrevocable.

Inform beneficiaries of a general timeframe for the distribution of assets. Per legal requirements, keep heirs and beneficiaries of the Trust informed as to the status of the Trust’s property and how distribution is progressing.
